Self Makeup Course in Hanoi Old Quarter: English-Speaking Classes

By the Vietnam Makeup Artist team · 2026-11-06

We run 1-to-1 and small-group makeup classes in English at our Hanoi location, held in the Old Quarter's central district. Sessions run 2–4 hours depending on your goal—bridal prep, everyday techniques, or photoshoot looks. Each class includes live application, hands-on practice, product guidance for tropical humidity, and a personalized takeaway. We cover foundation matching for mixed or deeper skin tones, heat-proof techniques, and products that survive all-day wear in Hanoi's climate. Small groups are ideal for friends or bridesmaids; private lessons let us tailor every step to your skin, undertones, and skill level. Ask us for a quote on WhatsApp—pricing depends on group size, lesson length, and whether we travel to your hotel. No experience needed; we teach foundation-to-finish or advanced refinement. What makes an Old Quarter class different from online tutorials?

You're in the room with us, applying products on your own skin, feeling techniques on real texture. Online videos can't tell you if your foundation shade shifts in humidity or if your powder sits too heavy for Hanoi's heat. In a live class, we watch your application in natural and indoor light, adjust your grip, remix undertones on your undertone, and hand you products that actually work in Vietnam's 80–95% humidity. You leave with muscle memory, not just notes. A class also forces accountability—you show up, you practice, results compound week to week if you book follow-ups.

How do we match undertones for Western and mixed skin in one class?

Undertone matching is where most self-taught makeup fails. We start by assessing your skin in daylight near a window—not under fluorescent lights, where cool tones look false. We use a simple vein test (inner wrist in sunlight) and swatches of 3–5 shades on your jawline, letting you compare undertone shifts as you move. For mixed or deeper skin tones, we're strict: no match-by-photo, no guessing. We layer foundation in thin passes so you see how it settles over your natural tone, and we keep notes on what works so you can reorder the same shade.

Why do makeup techniques fail in Hanoi's humidity—and how do classes teach climate-proof methods?

Hanoi averages 75–80% humidity year-round, spiking to 95% in summer. Powder sits heavier, cream products migrate, and primers separate if you use the wrong base. In a class, we teach humidity-specific priming: a gel primer base instead of silicone for oily skin, blotting paper placement before powder, and how to set makeup in "zones" (T-zone first, cheeks last) so longevity matches where you sweat. We demo product layering—showing the difference between a one-coat powder application and a feather method that lasts 8+ hours without caking. We also cover touch-up kits: what to carry, how to refresh without your makeup looking patchy by 3 p.m. You walk away knowing why your makeup failed before, not just how to hide the problem.

Discover our approach to makeup at your hotel, where we apply these same humidity-proof techniques on event days.

Should you book 1-to-1 or group—and what does each session cover?

Class TypeBest ForDurationWhat's Included
1-to-1 privateBridal trials, corrective makeup, very light skin tones or complex undertones2–3 hoursFull face demo + your practice + product rec + written notes on your shade matches
Small group (3–5 people)Friends, bridesmaids, expats wanting community2.5–4 hoursFoundation theory, application demo, hands-on practice on each other, Q&A, product list
Ao dai or photoshoot prepFashion, editorial, cultural events2–3 hoursLighting-specific techniques, long-wear products, touch-up strategy, photo-safe blending

One-to-one suits you if you're marrying in Vietnam and want a full bridal trial beforehand; group sessions are cheaper per person and fun if you're doing makeup with friends. We also offer photoshoot makeup prep—same class structure, but we focus on how makeup reads on camera, which shades flatten, and how to adjust for outdoor vs. studio light.

What should you prepare before booking—and what's the real cost structure?

Ask us for a quote on WhatsApp. Pricing depends on group size (private vs. 3+ people), session length, and whether we come to your hotel or you visit us in the Old Quarter. Before booking, answer these four questions:

  1. What's your skin type and main concern? (oily, dry, combination, sensitive, dehydrated—this changes product selection)
  2. Are you prepping for an event or building everyday skills? (Bridal trials involve multiple shades and longer sessions; everyday makeup is shorter and more flexible.)
  3. Do you have a preferred product range? (We stock international and Vietnamese brands; if you want to learn with what you own, bring it.)
  4. Can you commit to one session, or would you prefer a follow-up? (First session teaches technique; a second session 1–2 weeks later locks in muscle memory.)

Bring your own makeup if you want to practice with products you already own. We'll assess whether they're right for your skin and climate. If not, we recommend alternatives. We don't bundle or upsell; we quote transparently based on what you ask for.

How does a makeup class session actually run—minute by minute?

First 15 minutes: Consultation. We ask your skin type, concerns, and goals. You share any product allergies or sensitivities. We look at your skin in daylight and assess undertone, texture, and how your skin reacts to humidity.

Next 20–30 minutes: Education. We demo foundation application on ourselves or a practice face, talking through primer choice, blending technique, and how to layer for your skin. We show the difference between under- and over-powdering, and why it matters in Hanoi's climate.

30–45 minutes: Hands-on practice. You apply foundation, concealer, and powder on your own face while we watch, correct grip, adjust blending, and give real-time feedback. We pause to show you products side-by-side, explaining undertone and coverage differences.

20–30 minutes: Eyes and lips (optional, depending on session length). We teach eyeshadow blending, liner placement for your eye shape, and lip color matching to your undertone.

Last 10–15 minutes: Takeaway notes. We write down your exact shade matches, product names, and the order you apply them. We answer follow-up questions and discuss whether you want a second session.

Total time: 2–3 hours. You leave with a finished face you did yourself, muscle memory, and written proof of what works.

What to check before you book

  • Confirm the language: We teach in English. If you need translation to Vietnamese or another language, ask upfront.
  • Clarify the location: Old Quarter classes are indoors, air-conditioned. If you prefer your hotel or homestay, ask about travel fees (we service Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, and travel to Da Nang and Hoi An by request).
  • Ask about product supply: Do we provide testers, or do you bring your own? What's included vs. extra?
  • Confirm date and time: Hanoi heat peaks late morning (10 a.m.–2 p.m.). Many clients prefer early morning or late afternoon. Confirm availability.

We also offer makeup lessons for special skin types if you have acne, rosacea, or extremely sensitive skin. And if you're planning a wedding in Vietnam, our 1-to-1 makeup class can combine a trial with a full bridal day plan.
